This week, our friendly IS teacher, Mr. Cheong, introduced us to CSS. It stands for Cascading Style Sheets. We need to understand CSS in order to format web pages. Let me talk a little about CSS. CSS defines how HTML elements are displayed. The styles are also usually saved in external.css files. There is another 2 ways to use CSS which are Internal Style Sheet and Inline Styles. A .css file will look something like this:
This week we learnt yet a whole lot of stuff from our IS teacher, Mr Kent. Cheong. We will get to know about the backbone behind the website. We will also learn how to build web pages using HTML which stands for (Hypertext Markup Language). We were supposed to create a functional website using basic HTML or CSS. However, Mr Cheong said he will brief us more about that next week. I understand now how to create a simple website by using notepad. The format to do so will need to have:html, head, title and body
Lesson 2 was yet another fun and interesting lesson by our friendly Mr Cheong. We learnt about forums this week. People can write and leave comments on a forum. People can also discuss about topoics on a forum. We were told to create an account on Mr Cheong's website, www.webnewmedia.ning.com. We had to watch the three videos that were posted by Mr Cheong ang give our comments and personal thoughts about the videos. The three videos are 1) The social impact of new media technologies, 2) ethical issues on media usage and intellectual property and 3) blog/websites differences. I was assigned to number 3 as I was between register number 23-33. I have to write a 100 words comment on the blog/websites differences. Besides that, I also had to write 50 word comments on other people's posts. Lessons are getting more and more interesting. I hope next week's lesson will be filled with fun.
We learnt a wide range things from our friendly infocomm studies teacher, Mr Kent Cheong. We learnt about the history of the internet. We learnt that the internet started functioning at September 1969. It is a networking project by Pentagon's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA). The goals were to allow scientists at different locations to share information and to function if part of the network were disabled. He taught us the the internet has grown from only four host nodes during 1969 to more than 1000 during 1984 and today, there is more than 200 million host nodes. The internet is public, cooperative and independant network. He taught us there are many ways to connect to the internet like dial up access, DSL and cable modem. He also taught us that there are many ways to access the internet like ISP, OSP and the Wireless Internet Service Provider. He also taught us that the IP address is the number that uniquely identifies each computer or device connected to the Internet. We learnt from him that WWW stands for (World Wide Web) and a web browser is a program that allows people to view web pages. He also taught us that a home page is the first page that the Web site presents and it often provide connecctions to other Web pages. We learnt that downloading is the process of the computer rieceiving information and that the downloading time depends on the connection speed. We also learnt that URL stands for (Uniformed Resource Locator) and it is a unique address for a webpage. We learnt that a link is a build-in connection to another related web page location. He also taught us that a search engine is a program used to find web sites and web pages. He also told us that the nine basic types of web sites are:Portals, News, Informational, Business/Marketing, Educational, Entertainment, Advocacy, blog and personal. He taught us that a multimedia is an application integrating text with other media elements. He also told us what graphic formats are used on the web like BMP, JPEG, PNG, GIF and TIFF. He also told us that a thumbnail is a smaller version of a larger graphic. He also told us about other internet services like E-mail and messages can be sent through it. Mr Cheong also taught us the golden rule, netiquette, which simply means treat others how you would want them to treat you. Last but not least, we learnt about Web 1.0 and Web 2.0. Web 1.0 is that the writer of a certain website has to constantly update the website so as to attract readers and make it popular. However, Web 2.0 enables both the writer and the readers to update the website, thus improving it. Basically, this shows that technology throughout the World is improving greatly.
